The Magic of Philanthropy: A Hogwarts House Guide on Giving Back
As a lifelong Harry Potter fan, I grew up with Harry, Hermione, Ron, and the entire magical gang. The stories and characters of the wizarding world have brought me so much joy and comfort through the years, and taught me many important lessons about truth, loyalty and love.
Yesterday, July 31, was Harry Potter’s birthday and while he is a fictional character, I took to opportunity to “celebrate” by combining my love of the wizarding world with my love of philanthropy. It was so much fun to reflect on the values and traits of each Hogwarts house and match them with a philanthropic cause that resonates with their spirit. Here is what I came up with…
Gryffindors are known for their bravery and heroism. Members of this house are often seen taking bold actions, especially when others are in need. It makes perfect sense for Gryffindors to gravitate towards causes like disaster relief, where courage and quick decision-making are crucial. They are the first responders, running towards challenges where immediate action can save lives and restore communities.

The loyal and dedicated Hufflepuffs, with their strong sense of fairness and justice, would naturally gravitate towards environmentalism. This aligns perfectly with their values, as caring for the Earth requires both dedication and a commitment to nurturing our natural surroundings. Hufflepuffs might be particularly drawn to supporting initiatives like community gardens, local reforestation projects, and wildlife conservation efforts. Their inherent desire to protect and nurture makes them ideal advocates for sustaining and improving our environment, ensuring that it thrives for generations to come.
